Teaching Philosophy

My goal as a private piano teacher is to develop each individual student’s potential at the piano and empower them with the skills, knowledge, sense of responsibility, and confidence that will promote a lifelong love of music and learning.  In our 21st century culture of instant gratification and lightning-speed technology, I believe the challenge to make the study of classical piano relevant has never been more critical.  For that reason, I strive to create lessons that are engaging and interactive.  Rather than an authoritarian teaching style, I endeavor to generate a feeling of collaboration.  And, I am convinced, the gratification derived from a successful performance is one of the most compelling reasons for a student to endure the rigors of mindful practice.  Above all else, I believe cultivating a solid, pain-free technique is the foundation every student needs to play musically and with grace and efficiency.

The essential skills included in my teaching program:

  • Ability to internalize basic rhythm and pulse

  • Ability to sight-read (musical literacy)

  • Ability to perform with physical ease and technical efficiency

  • Ability to understand the basic elements of theory, form and harmony

  • Ability to work creatively and independently

  • Ability to respond to the interpretive elements of the composition

  • Ability to express the emotional character of the music

  • Ability to perform comfortably as a soloist and in ensemble playing
